On this page we concentrate on specific Scottish subjects including a selection of thistles and the Wallace Monument. Slightly off topic, we are also proud to introduce Bettine Bain's magnificent new Tree of Peace. As
usual, click on a small picture and a larger one should appear. |

The Thistle has been an important symbol of Scotland for more than five hundred years. It is often referred to as the ‘Guardian of Scotland‘ and legend tells of an invading Viking army stumbling onto a field of prickly thistles, a cry of pain from one of the soldiers alerting the Scots army to the attack. The motto associated with the Scottish thistle badge ‘Nemo me impune lacessit‘ is translated loosely into Scots tongue as “Wha daur meddle wi’ me?“ (although we prefer "No-one hurts me and gets away with it!"). Thistles first appeared on Scottish coinage in 1485 during the reign of James III.
